PROJECT OUTPUTS | EXHIBITIONS

We have generated an interactive exhibition to share our work with broader publics. It was developed in collaboration with Rob Cooksey and Rhys Thomas. The exhibition includes informative posters, artefacts and interactive activities. The exhibition has been on tour around the West Midlands and Penryn. It is available for hire by contacting the research team.

Bessant Gallery, School of Arts, University of Wolverhampton 30th March – 12 April 2019

The exhibition was launched at our Wolverhampton project closing event and was on display for two-weeks. It was seen by participants and project partners, other community groups in the West Midlands (including The Embroiderers Guild and the Lace-makers Guild) and staff, researchers and undergraduate and post-graduate students at the University of Wolverhampton.

Environment and Sustainability Institute, Penryn Campus, University of Exeter, 17th May -31st May 2019

The exhibition launch in Penryn was accompanied with a clothes swap and a screening of the project documentary Resolution. It was also on display during our Sustainable Clothing Journeys symposium, where local sustainable clothing businesses had the opportunity to interact with it. It remained in the interdisciplinary Environment and Sustainability Institute for a two-week period, where it was exposed to interdisciplinary scientists concerned with environmental protection.

George Wallis Building, Fashion and Textiles Department Final Show, School of Arts, University of Wolverhampton 8th-19th June

Our exhibition sat alongside the degree show, that showcased the work of art, design and media students. It was launched as part of the sold-out private view, which attended by local schools, colleges, business, staff, students and the wider public. Various publics continued to interact with it over the following two-weeks.

Design Centre, Islington, New Designers, 1st-11th July 2019

This hugely popular annual event featured our S4S exhibition. It was attended by industry professionals and representatives from universities across the countries with departments in design. It additionally presented the work of 3,000 talented graduate designers from across the UK.

Environmental Technologies and Resource Efficiency Support Service (EnTRESS) Wearing Out Waste Event, Tackling Sustainable Textiles, 12th July 2019

Our exhibition as featured as part of a morning of talks, exhibitions and workshops exploring the sustainable textile industry that included industry speakers and academics sustainable fashion, waste fabric, waste water. Speakers included Carrie Somers from our partner organisation Fashion Revolution. Fiona Hackney (co-investigator) and Jo Bloodworth (workshop facilitator) also contributed talks. Representatives from businesses attended this event to discuss the sustainability of textiles.

The Poly, Falmouth, 6th-7th September 2019

On the weekend of 6-7 September 2019, we held a weekend of activities at The Poly. This was kick-started on the Friday evening with a talk by Professor Clare Saunders and the screening of our project documentary Resolution. Afterwards, the exhibition was available for viewing. On the Saturday, the exhibition as open to the public and we held workshops on 1) working towards a zero waste wardrobe; 2) free form tunic making; 3) increasing your sewing confidence; and 4) making scrubbies from waste fabric. Three of these four sessions were led by Cornwall project participants. Approximately 40 members of the public attended.

Back Lane Studio, Redruth, 13th-17th August 2019

We used this wonderful artist residence space to set up and showcase our exhibition. The space was used by project participant and textile artist who was on hand to help people with making or mending projects. We had a public film screening of our project documentary Resolution on the evening of 16th August.

University of Wolverhampton Research Showcase, Cholmondely Room and Terrace, House of Lords, 19th July 2019

We had the opportunity to take a significant part of our exhibition to a research showcase event at the House of Lords, hosted by the Rt. Hon. Lord Paul Marylebone. In addition to our ‘stall’, which hosted leaflets and artefacts produced on the project, the event included a pop-up sustainable fashion show. Fashion students and project participants took to the podium to tell the esteemed audience about their heart rendering sustainable fashion journeys.

Helston Museum of Cornish Life, 9th-12th September 2019

The Helston Museum of Cornish Life was keen to host our exhibition for a few days in September. It was available for all interested members of the public to see.

Breeze Arts and Makers Festival, Trereife House, Penzance, 13-15th September 2019

The Breeze festival celebrates handmade work and creative practices that have a conscious ethic. The organisers had seen our exhibition at the ESI and requested its presence at Breeze. We are delighted that our work has been displayed alongside other very worthy creative art.
